DIG FOR JEWELS IN THE HIGH DESERT
Did you know that Central Oregon, and specifically Crook County, is considered the rockhound capital of the world? Because of the geological activity in the area, a variety of rocks can be found within a relatively small area, making the hunt for agate, jasper, limbcast, petrified wood, moss, dendrite and angel wing that much easier to find. Read below about my adventure in rockhounding.
Happy hunting and digging!
Lynnette
My hubby and I were bored one August weekend so we jumped in the Subi—my nickname for my Subaru Impreza—with only our sleeping bags, a pup tent, and one day’s supply of food, and set out on a dusty adventure east of Redmond, Oregon.
Not exactly sure of what we were going to find or even do, we made a left onto a forest service road while driving through the Ochoco National Forest, just outside of Prineville. We found ourselves climbing up the mountain on gravel switch backs for miles and what seemed like hours. While looking for a pristine place to camp with bird’s eye views, we discovered many mineral mining claims as indicated by the plaques placed on various pine trees along the old logging road. We were in Thunder Egg territory.

Respecting those who have mines in the area, we looked for our Thunder Eggs along the road and in places where no claims existed. Needless to say, we ended up with a nice collection of eggs in different sizes and some of them we even found along the edge of the road. The next morning, we set off for a visit to the Lucky Strike Mine located a few miles from where we had set up camp. The Lucky Strike Mine is owned and ran by Kop (Leonard Kopcinski) and his right arm, Cindy. Kop is a fascinating man in his eighties full of entertaining stories and rock trivia. Cindy also makes these beautiful lamps from slices of precious stones in array of colors and designs that are for sale at the Mine. If you are looking for really big Thunder Eggs, Kop will take you up into his claim to dig with major equipment for your gems. He charges $1 a pound and has a 20 lb. minimum. Otherwise, you can just pick from a pile of eggs and pay $1 per pound. Camping is available at the Mine with restroom facilities (an outhouse) and running water.
